Nero 9 is a well organized set of multimedia authoring tools that includes DVD burning software that can make all your home productions and data backup really look professional and sleek. You can choose to download it directly to your machine or order the actual software. The size of the download is extensive, but so are the capabilities – it’s worth the wait but don’t try it if you’re running a dial-up connection.
Highlights of the many facets of Nero 9 include:
This review is admittedly focused on DVD burning software. But the many other services offered contribute to its high ranking. Nero also supports dual-layered discs for increased storage capacity, and speaking of increased storage capacity: Blu-ray. Blu-ray is all the rage because of how much storage space it offers: five times that of your basic DVD and believe us Blu-ray is definitely looking like the future incarnate.
If you’re running Vista (sorry), this program also features a one-click disc copy function called Nero DiscCopy Gadget optimized only for Vista. This is a sidebar function that lives on your desktop right out there in the open and enables super-convenient drag-and-drop functionality for copying and burning.
Personalized disc labels are also another cool feature – all your home video productions can now sport a custom label.
This program truly has (almost) it all: DVD burn capabilities, DVD authoring, virtual imaging, CD and music functions and more.
Nero 9’s data burning supports CDs and DVDs but it did prove a bit confusing to get to the right place – there are a lot of menus and options and sometimes there is more than one way to get to the function you want. But once you get there, drag and drop the data information you want to copy and burn into the Nero interface and click the burn button. Reading and writing ISO files is perhaps one of Nero 9’s most valuable data tools. ISO files are complete images taken of the data or disc and stored in an uncompressed format.
Nero 9 also has the ability to backup and recover computer data. You can also schedule backups to happen at any point in the near future – they even have a neat little calendar function to assist in the planning.
Nero 9 can also be used as a photo editor, slideshow creator with pictures and audio tracks, video creator and editor and even label-maker. We also successfully burned unencrypted DVDs, converted video files, burned to Blu-ray Disc (you have to have a Blu-ray burner to use this highly expansive storage format, but it is well worth it) and even record live TV from a built-in TV tuner and later edit out the commercials.
